I also had this problem a while back. I was trying to upgrade form 3.5.6
to 3.7.7. Since I was only upgrading to stay current I just shrugged my
shoulders and assumed the issue was some yet-to-be-discovered subtlety
in my code.

I'll definitely look into the DISABLE-SQL-READER-SYNTAX trick mentioned
by James Bielman, since it would be good to use a non-ancient CLSQL.
