I had that same problem with my computer (Intel 845G chipset, running Debian).
Now if I could only remember what I did to fix it.
I believe that my solution included getting rid of the sound stuff that was
partially installed, installing the latest ALSA drivers and then getting the
file permissions right (add user to audio group?).
